Y-DNA Consistency Checker

Checks whether your Y-DNA haplogroup and a match's are consistent with sharing a recent direct paternal-line ancestor, or whether they rule it out.

Just type the full haplogroup (with or without the letter prefix) in either box below. The prefix dropdowns are optional, only there for a quick check if that's all you know so far.

Where this data comes from

This tool builds the correct comparison link for FamilyTreeDNA Discover from what you type in (handling prefixes and alternate SNP names), and privately checks whether one haplogroup sits upstream or downstream of the other on FTDNA's public tree to give you a quick green/red/amber read. We don't reproduce FTDNA's tree data on this page; for the full picture, follow the link to FTDNA's own comparison.

If a haplogroup isn't in FTDNA's public tree yet (very newly named SNPs, or ones only placed by other labs), the lookup will say so rather than guess.

A Y-DNA match, however deep, can never confirm a recent shared ancestor on its own, only rule one in or out as possible. Always cross-check with genealogical paper trail and, where possible, deeper testing.
