Ethnicity Percentage Calculator

Works out which generation an ethnicity percentage from your results roughly lines up with, so "3% Greek" turns into an actual answer instead of a guess.

AncestorExpected %

Why this is an estimate, not a fact

Each generation, you inherit roughly half of each parent's DNA, but which half is random. Two siblings can inherit noticeably different amounts from the same great-great-grandparent, and past about 6-7 generations back it's common to inherit no detectable DNA from a specific ancestor at all, even though you're genealogically descended from them. The table above shows the mathematically expected percentage per generation, not a guarantee. Testing companies also each use their own reference panels, which change over time and disagree with each other, so the same real ancestor can show up as a different percentage (or a different region entirely) depending on which company and which year.

This is a genealogical estimate based on how DNA is inherited, not a health, medical, or legal claim of ancestry, and it can't tell you which specific ancestor a percentage came from.
